In July 1720, La Buse wrecked his ship off one of the Comoros islands, probably Mayotte, and was picked up by Taylor, another pirate captain, in the Defence<\/i>, who gave him command of the Victory<\/i>. The next month the pirates encountered the East India Company ships Cassandra<\/i> and Greenwich<\/i>.<\/p>\n

This led to a pitched battle that has been termed \u2018the most resounding of all pirate engagements.\u2019 The combat lasted several hours and scores of the Company ship\u2019s crew were killed or wounded. After it was over, the pirates are said to have gone on shore and pillaged Johann [Anjouan, pictured above].<\/p>\n
